Following severe flooding in the 2nd District, Governor Tony Evers has declared a state of emergency. He visited the area to assess damage and meet with residents. The flooding has caused significant damage and affected many in the community, according to the City of Milwaukee.
During his tour, Governor Evers described plans to support recovery efforts for those affected. In a statement from the city, officials said, “I want to thank the Governor for taking the time to meet with residents, and show his support and solidarity with all those impacted in this moment.” The governor’s proclamation will allow local agencies and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide assistance, as reported by the City of Milwaukee.
Emergency shelters are available for residents affected by flooding at Holler Park on S. Sixth St. and Washington Park Senior Center on W. Vliet St., operated by the American Red Cross, offering food, water, emotional support, and device charging. Walk-ins are accepted or residents can call 1-800-733-2767. The Department of Public Works is providing free special bulky item pickups for households with City garbage collection, with follow-up pickups if needed, and city drop-off centers have extended hours and waived fees, as stated by the City of Milwaukee.
