A fatal accident in Sterling Heights has claimed the life of a man who encountered a tragic confrontation with a power line while operating a mechanical lift yesterday afternoon, as reported by multiple local news outlets. According to ClickOnDetroit, the incident occurred near Metro Parkway in a wooded area, and the victim was a 41-year-old man from Grosse Pointe Park who became unresponsive following the electrocution.
Emerging details from WXYZ highlight that the incident took place around 2:30 p.m. near Metropolitan Parkway and Mound Road, when the man was doing landscaping work and unfortunately came into contact with an energized power line; despite the immediate response of first responders who performed CPR, he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
In the wake of the tragedy, DTE Energy issued a statement reinforcing the importance of safety around power lines. "This is an important reminder to take safety precautions around power lines, whether you are a professional or a homeowner working in the yard," CBS Detroit shared the statement, which also said, "Always be sure to look up and know where power lines are located before beginning any outdoor project, particularly those involving working at high elevations and on ladders. If you are near a utility line and are unsure what it is, treat it as if it is energized."
The name of the man has not been released as investigations continue, with local authorities and DTE pledging to work closely to unravel the sequence of events that led to this fatal encounter, which now leaves a community in mourning and a family grappling with an irreplaceable loss. The full breadth of the investigation’s findings is yet to be unveiled, with WXYZ noting that DTE is determined to support the process, as they and others advocate for heightened awareness and precaution among those laboring in proximity to the life-threatening and unseen forces that power lines embody.
