In a turn of events for the Hernando Builder's Association, its own Executive Officer, Nita Hope Beckwith Melaugh, has been accused of siphoning the organization's funds for personal use. According to a press release from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, dated yesterday, the alleged embezzlement came to light following an internal report by the association.
Following a thorough investigation, it has been revealed that, spanning from January 2023 to November 2024, Melaugh was able to illicitly use a total of $43,952.91 for personal items and services. Attempting to explain some of the questionable expenditures, Melaugh appeared at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office last Thursday, which ultimately didn't prevent her from being charged. She aimed to provide a justification for the expenses logged against the association's bank and credit card statements.
Despite the cloud of transgression, the Hernando Builder's Association is actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The funds Melaugh is accused of misappropriating were discovered to be spent on women's clothing, medical co-pays, and various other personal expenses. Records connecting the purchases to Melaugh’s personal accounts became a cornerstone of the case.
On the heels of this discovery, Melaugh was duly arrested and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center, where she faces charges of grand theft. This legal action marks a sharp departure from her prior seven-year tenure with the organization and serves as a cautionary tale about the trust we choose to place in those tasked to manage an association's livelihood.
