In an effort to bolster the safety of youngsters traversing to Pinecrest Elementary, Hillsborough County is kicking off a study next year to pinpoint which improvements can be made to walking and bicycling routes frequented by students. Parents and local residents are being encouraged to chime in with their thoughts on the proposed changes through the Hillsborough County's online forum, available until August 22. With bus service not an option for those living within two miles of the school, the necessity for secure walking and biking paths is indisputable.
Engineers are routinely tasked with examining the school routes, seeking out enhancements that might better protect pedestrian and bikers alike. Among those improvements under review, as detailed on the Hillsborough County website, new high-visibility crosswalks, pedestrian signage, and a shared-use path are on the table, alongside an extension of the school zone on Lithia Pinecrest Road, complete with adjusted flashing beacons.
The Hillsborough County has been actively involved in engaging with key stakeholders, including school principals, PTA members, and other vested parties through School Project Advisory Committees. Their mission is to solicit diverse perspectives, ascertain community safety concerns, and integrate this valuable feedback into the project. In line with this approach, the county has embarked on a virtual engagement initiative to present the potential pedestrian and bicycling enhancements to the parent body and the broader community, ensuring that those who are most impacted by these changes have a say in the matter.
More ambitious safety proposals also include new school zone designations with flashing beacon signage, sidewalk ramps, and crosswalks featuring pedestrian-friendly signal timings. These proposed safety measures extend to the C.R. 39 south of Lithia Pinecrest Road and their feasibility, including the potential for reduced posted speeds and additional shared-use paths, are being explored. All proposals are aimed at fostering a secure environment that encourages more students to opt for walking or bicycling to school, as per the Hillsborough County.
