Honolulu residents can expect a variety of weather patterns this week, starting with moderate to locally breezy trade winds and passing showers. The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ivo are expected to bring increased clouds, and shower activity primarily on the windward and mauka sides. High pressure is holding steady to the north and is the main force driving the current weather conditions, according to the latest from the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
As the effects of former Tropical Cyclone Ivo reach the area, a fast-moving low-level trough is expected to develop. Localized rainfall of up to 0.25 inches is possible in windward and mauka regions of the smaller islands. By midweek, another surge of moisture may bring additional showers. Following these systems, trade winds are forecast to strengthen, leading to a return to drier conditions.
The aviation sector is not expected to experience significant impacts, aside from brief periods of MVFR conditions in low ceilings and showers. No AIRMETs were in effect at the time of the report, though adjustments may be required as the trough advances.
A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through this afternoon for several waters around Hawaii, driven by stable conditions from ridging north of the state. Tonight, trade winds are forecast to briefly weaken below advisory thresholds as a weak trough from the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ivo moves westward over the smaller islands. South-facing shores are expected to maintain seasonal surf heights with a series of incoming south swells.
Fire weather risk has lessened for now, with conditions expected to remain below critical thresholds into early next week. The passing trough is bringing higher humidity and an increased chance of precipitation across the Hawaiian Islands. Later in the week, high pressure is forecast to strengthen, leading to a return of more stable and drier conditions.
