The Honolulu Little League team lost 5-1 to Connecticut in the opening game of the Little League World Series. Honolulu held an early lead, but Connecticut scored multiple runs in the fifth inning to take control of the game. Honolulu maintained a narrow lead for much of the match before Connecticut secured the victory.
Despite a strong start in the series, Hawaii's streak of opening-game victories ended, according to Spectrum Local News. In the fifth inning, an error and a single led to four runs for Connecticut, shifting the momentum in the closely contested game. Bronson Fermahin pitched effectively through the first four innings, recording eight strikeouts and keeping Connecticut’s offense in check. Honolulu now faces an elimination game and must win five consecutive games to advance from the 10-team U.S. field.
Spectrum Local News highlighted the sequence of missed opportunities by Honolulu and Connecticut’s rally. Honolulu scored in the bottom of the third inning when Josh Tanaka’s hit allowed Kuana Payanal to cross home plate. In the fourth inning, a runner was thrown out at the plate, and a bases-loaded situation ended without a run being scored.
The Honolulu team will play again tomorrow at 7 a.m., facing either Illinois or Pennsylvania in their next tournament game. As reported by KITV4, the winner of yesterday’s matchup will be Honolulu’s opponent in the early morning game. The elimination bracket means Honolulu must win to stay in the tournament after their recent loss.
