The City of Houston has been bustling with visitors, and their spending habits have proven to be a boon for the local economy. The year 2024 saw a record-breaking nearly $11 billion poured into the city by tourists, an 8.6% upsurge from the preceding year, the impact of which rippled throughout the economy, resulting in a total economic infusion of $16.6 billion, detailed in a report by Tourism Economics for Houston First. Houston's municipal government website released these figures, painting a portrait of a city in vigorous economic health.

Even with the growth in spending, the city itself attracted an all-time high of 53.9 million visitors, 4.8% more than the previous year. These visitors, comprising a vast majority of domestic explorers and 1.3 million globetrotters, have directly been a boon, supporting nearly 121,800 jobs. Houston Mayor John Whitmire expressed pride, stating, "I'm proud of this new Houston visitor record, which speaks to all the amazing things people can see and do in our city," when interviewed by the municipal government of Houston.

2024 was also a landmark year for Houston's tourism infrastructure. Airport activity surged, with about 63 million people bustling through Houston’s passenger airports, and hotel bookings rose by 8.2%, with 25 million room nights in the city's ledger. "For years now, we have been laser-focused on crafting strategies directly aligned with our mission: generating business for Houston’s hospitality industry and contributing to the city’s broader economic growth," Michael Heckman, President and CEO of Houston First, told the municipal government of Houston in a testament to their strategy's success.

Widening the lens to the entire metropolitan area, over 92 million tourists explored the region, which is up by 5.5% from 2023, including nearly 2 million who traveled from Mexico, representing an impressive 16% increase from the previous year. Observing these figures, the region's direct visitor spending hit $16.6 billion, spurring a total economic punch of $27 billion and underpinning 206,589 jobs.

As the operator of important local convention centers and entertainment venues, Houston First Corporation’s work as the city's marketing arm has been pivotal in elevating Houston to an elite destination status. Bolstered by this newfound economic vigor, the city shines in showcasing its variegated culture, culinary splendor, performing arts, and as a beacon for medical and space innovation.
