In a series of interventions addressing the recent spate of "teen takeovers" in Northeast Florida and Duval County, authorities made several arrests and recovered guns and drugs. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, these social-media-organized gatherings of juveniles have caused public disturbances, including fights, vandalism, underage drinking, and drug use across the area.
On July 26, fights at Friendship Fountain were disrupted by District One bike officers, who apprehended a suspect allegedly reaching for a pistol in his backpack amidst a potential shooting scenario, according to an official JSO statement. Following a brief chase, the individual was caught, and the officers confiscated a pistol and marijuana. On July 27, the office took action after being alerted by the community to a "Fight Fest" event scheduled for August 2, which had been promoted through social channels without permits or authorization.
Ahead of this planned event, JSO set about closely monitoring potential locations and coordinating teams for intervention. Sheriff Waters, along with Strategic Communications, issued public warnings regarding the enforcement of law against such gatherings. On the day in question, August 2, task force officers followed groups to various sites, including apartment complexes and a locality on the westside, where they encountered teens trespassing and participating in illegal activities.
Several traffic stops led to arrests, whilst one specific instance saw officers witness a juvenile handing over two guns to individuals in another vehicle. The officers made an arrest, and subsequent searches led to the discovery of more drugs in the juvenile's possession. Overall, the operation successfully resulted in the recovery of six guns and seizure of around 90 grams of marijuana, with seven felony and two misdemeanor arrests, and one notice to appear issued.
The JSO's efforts to combat these disruptive, and often hazardous, teen takeovers will persist, as the commitment to ensuring safety within the community remains steadfast. The sheriff’s office has expressed gratitude towards residents for providing critical information and encouraged continued vigilance and reporting of tips via phone at 904.630.0500, or by email at [email protected]. More details on the incidents and the JSO’s responses can be found on their website and various social media outlets.
