The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced a series of closures on Northbound U.S. 131, starting from H Avenue to the U.S. 131 Business Route (BR) in Kalamazoo. The shutdowns are intended for the installation of bridge beams for a new ramp as part of an expansion project and are scheduled over the next three weekends: August 8-11, 15-18, and 22-25, each affecting traffic from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday, as reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
During the closures, MDOT will reroute northbound U.S. 131 traffic using a newly opened ramp that facilitates detours which connect to the eastbound business route. The detour reroutes drivers to exit at Douglas Avenue before looping back to the business route that leads them on their northbound path, as noted by MLive.
Michigan's governor, Gretchen Whitmer underscored the broader implications of such infrastructure developments, saying, "Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely." According to Whitmer, the state's efforts, which include fixing or replacing nearly 24,500 lane miles of road and 1,900 bridges, solicit local job growth without increasing taxes. She emphasized the importance of a bipartisan local road funding plan for the continuation of such work, as mentioned by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The US-131 BR expansion is an MDOT project supported by secured funding from Michigan Sen. Sean McCann, Rep. Julie Rogers, and former U.S. Congressman Fred Upton, and it represents a significant upgrade from the original completed segment from 1964. The investment into this endeavor is predicted to directly and indirectly support 181 jobs, based on economic modeling. This infrastructure development not only aims at easing traffic but also at providing a critical connection to downtown Kalamazoo, which has been missing up till now in the current configuration, as per a report by MLive.
