A sixth-floor fire at a Kaneohe high-rise Saturday night brought swift community action when neighbors grabbed the building's fire hose and began battling flames themselves before professional firefighters arrived at the scene.
The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. at 46-270 Kahuhipa Street, according to KHON2. Honolulu Fire Department crews arrived at 7:35 p.m. to find no immediate signs of smoke or fire from the street-facing side of the building, but further investigation revealed smoke and flames coming from a sixth-floor unit on the opposite side.
When firefighters reached the sixth floor, KHON2 reported they witnessed "neighbors using a firefighter's water hose to extinguish the fire and assisting others" with evacuations. Firefighters then initiated an aggressive fire attack while securing a water supply, bringing the situation under control by 7:53 p.m. and fully extinguishing the flames at 8:00 p.m.
Medical Response and Casualties
Four people were treated at the scene, with two requiring hospitalization for smoke inhalation. According to KITV, "a woman believed to be in her 60s, and a man believed to be in his 50s, were reported to be in stable condition after suffering from" smoke inhalation. HFD provided initial basic life support before transferring patient care to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services at 7:50 p.m.
The Red Cross was called to assist displaced residents, though the exact number of people affected has not been released by authorities.
Recurring Fire Issues on Kahuhipa Street
This weekend's incident continues a concerning pattern of fires along Kahuhipa Street. The same address experienced a significant fire in February 2021, as reported by Hawaii News Now. That blaze was "reported about 10 a.m. in a unit at 46-270 Kahuhipa St.". It required 36 personnel from nine HFD units before being "extinguished at around 10:20 a.m." with "one person treated for smoke inhalation."
Even earlier, in February 2017, firefighters responded to a townhome fire at 46-411 Kahuhipa Street, where, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, a neighbor required hospitalization for smoke inhalation. The recurring incidents raise questions about building safety standards and fire prevention measures in older Kaneohe residential complexes.
Investigation and Response
The cause of Saturday's fire remains under investigation by HFD. KHON2 noted the response "occurred on Kahuhipa Street, where the first unit arrived at 7:35 p.m. with 12 units staffed by 46 personnel," demonstrating the significant resource commitment required for high-rise fire suppression.
The quick action by neighbors, combined with the professional response from HFD and EMS, prevented what could have been a much more serious incident. The community response reflects the resilience and preparedness that has become increasingly important across Hawaii following recent wildfire incidents throughout the state.
