Ohio residents have a new reason to flock to Lake Erie following the introduction of the revamped Put-in-Bay Aquatic Visitor Center. The grand opening, spearheaded with a ribbon cutting yesterday by Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz, showcased the center's modernized facilities and the state's commitment to both education and recreation. "Fran and I have enjoyed bringing our family to Lake Erie to enjoy all it has to offer," DeWine was quoted in a statement obtained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), adding that the center embodies the wealth of outdoor activities Ohio, "the Heart of it All," has in store.

According to Director Mertz in the same release, the visitor center is set to become a vital learning hub for anglers and naturalists keen to delve deeper into Lake Erie's ecosystem. Besides fishing opportunities from the dock, visitors can engage with interactive displays designed to educate the public on local fish species and environmental conservation. The center, aiming to connect future generations with the area's rich aquatic life, falls in line with Governor DeWine's H2Ohio water quality initiative—a major step forward to preserving Lake Erie's resources for the millions who rely on it for drinking water.

Visitors to the center, located on South Bass Island, will find it thoroughly modernized. Brought to life are the stories of the lake's significant fishing heritage and the importance of species like walleye, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. Odeline enhancements made to the facility include structural improvements, waterproofing measures, and the addition of an ADA-accessible ramp and entrance to ensure accessibility for all.

Another noteworthy feature is the center's historical journey from a fish hatchery operated by ODNR Division of Wildlife from 1907 to 1988, to an educational space from 1992—and finally, to the interactive learning environment it is today after a generous $6.2 million renovation funded by the General Assembly. "The visitor center is a great launching point for adventures across Lake Erie, The Walleye Capital of the World," Kendra Wecker, Chief of ODNR Division of Wildlife, told the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). After receiving extensive updates from 2009 to 2023, the Aquatic Visitor Center is poised to welcome guests through October 1, from Tuesday through Saturday, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with no admission fee.

For families like the DeWines, and for anyone drawn to Lake Erie's shores in pursuit of knowledge or reprieve, the Put-in-Bay Aquatic Visitor Center stands as a testament to Ohio's cherished waterways and the ongoing efforts to safeguard them. It’s a celebration not only of the local environment but also of the community's lasting connection to the stories and life that thrive beneath the surface of the lake.
