In Zanesville, a recent court verdict and sentencing have highlighted the daunting challenges faced by the justice system in sexual assault cases involving minors, especially with delayed disclosures. According to a report by the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office, Cody Friend, a 32-year-old individual from Lancaster, was sentenced to 44 years in prison without the possibility of reduction for charges that include ten counts of Rape and one count of Gross Sexual Imposition.
Muskingum County Prosecutor Ron Welch emphasized the severity of Friend's offenses, noting that the assaults caused lifelong damage to the victims, evident in their struggles with addiction, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Despite the victims' call for both justice and mercy, with one stating, according to Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office, "Justice should not only punish; it should seek the truth, healing and change," Welch felt compelled to request the maximum penalty of 111 ½ years.
During the sentencing, the victims confronted their abuser with impact statements before Judge Gerald Anderson, noting Friend's lack of remorse. In a statement obtained by the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office, it was mentioned that the defendant refused to make a statement during the pre-sentence investigation and prior to sentencing. Ultimately, Judge Anderson imposed a mandatory 44-year term, meaning that Cody Friend will not be eligible for sentence reduction, and upon release, he is required to register as a tier three sex offender.
The difficulty in prosecuting such cases was underscored by Welch, who explained, "Sexual assault cases are the most difficult cases we handle," according to the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office. He detailed the challenges of balancing the trial's emotional toll on victims, the quality of evidence, and the potential for a successful conviction.
