A tragic turn of events has been reported following a vehicle collision that took place on July 3, at the intersection of Mountain Vista Street and Rawhide Street in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the incident, which initially injured one driver and resulted in a later fatality. According to the reports, the incident involved a 2003 GMC Yukon and a 2017 Hyundai Sonata.
The GMC, driven by 41-year-old Carlos Lee of Las Vegas, was traveling southbound when it collided with the Hyundai, which was initiating a left turn onto the road. Lee fled the scene on foot after the accident but later returned showing signs of impairment. As a result of fleeing scene and his condition upon returning, Lee was arrested and charged with DUI and hit-and-run, and is currently booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
The Hyundai's driver, a 78-year-old woman, was transported to Sunrise Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries on August 6, according to the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner. It was reported that, despite all life-saving efforts, the elderly driver could not recover. The name of the Hyundai driver has not been released pending notification of next of kin. In a cruel twist of policy, her death will not be included in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's traffic fatality statistics due to it occurring more than thirty days after the incident.
Further investigation into the collision by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Collision Investigation Section follows reports with an assessment that intends to construct a clearer understanding of the tragic incident.
