Two young brothers who disappeared from their Los Angeles foster home were safely located by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police yesterday afternoon, ending a multi-state search that began when the children vanished days earlier. The swift recovery demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-jurisdictional cooperation in child abduction cases.
The children, 2-year-old Derek Alejandro Rodriguez-Hernandez and 10-year-old Jaden Hernandez, were found after 8 News Now reported LVMPD Fusion Watch spotted a suspect vehicle near Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road around 3:20 p.m. yesterday. The vehicle was connected to a California Amber Alert that had been active since the children's disappearance.
The Foster Home Disappearance
According to 8 News Now, the brothers were last seen walking away from their foster care home in the 300 block of South Virgil Avenue in Los Angeles on August 21 at 1:30 a.m. Los Angeles Police Department investigators believed their biological mother, 30-year-old Jackeline Hernandez-Torres, had taken them from the foster home to the area of the 1500 block of East 52nd Street.
The Amber Alert was initiated on August 21, identifying Hernandez-Torres as the suspect and listing both children as her biological sons. The alert system was designed to mobilize community assistance in locating the missing children quickly.
Strategic Las Vegas Detection
The breakthrough came when LVMPD's monitoring systems identified the suspect vehicle in the Paradise Road corridor, a heavily trafficked area near major Las Vegas hotels and entertainment venues. Officers conducted a vehicle stop and detained the individuals involved, bringing the children to safety.
The intersection of Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road sits in Las Vegas's entertainment district, where law enforcement surveillance systems are well-positioned to identify out-of-state vehicles linked to active investigations. This location choice likely reflects the sophisticated monitoring capabilities that helped ensure a quick resolution.
Multi-State Coordination Success
LVMPD is continuing to collaborate with the Los Angeles Police Department as the investigation proceeds. AMBER Alert notes that the system is designed to instantly galvanize communities to assist in the search for and the safe recovery of an endangered missing or abducted child.
This case highlights the challenging dynamics that can arise when children are placed in foster care while biological parents maintain emotional connections. The incident underscores the complex intersection of child welfare systems and family relationships, where parents may take actions they believe serve their children's best interests despite existing legal custody arrangements.
The rapid resolution demonstrates the increasing effectiveness of law enforcement coordination between California and Nevada, particularly important given the frequent movement of people between Los Angeles and Las Vegas along the Interstate 15 corridor.
