A 78-year-old Las Vegas woman has died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run collision involving a suspected impaired driver more than a month ago, highlighting the ongoing crisis of traffic fatalities plaguing the valley. The victim succumbed to her injuries this week, according to authorities who were notified by the Clark County coroner's office.
The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Mountain Vista Street and Rawhide Street on July 3 around 7:16 p.m., according to KTNV. The woman, driving a Hyundai Sonata, was attempting to turn left from Rawhide onto Mountain Vista when she was struck by an oncoming southbound 2003 GMC Yukon.
Suspect Fled Then Returned
The driver of the Yukon, identified by police as Carlos Lee, 41, of Las Vegas, initially fled the scene on foot after the collision. In an unusual turn of events, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Lee returned to the scene and showed signs of impairment.
Emergency medical personnel transported the elderly victim to Sunrise Hospital with serious injuries. Lee was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on DUI and hit-and-run-related charges, according to 8 News Now.
Legal Proceedings Continue
Court records show Lee posted bond on July 8 and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 30. The intersection where the tragedy occurred sits in a busy part of the southeast valley, an area that has experienced increased development and traffic in recent years.
Due to the timing of the woman's death occurring beyond Nevada's 30-day reporting window, it will not officially count as a traffic-related fatality in state statistics. This administrative detail underscores how delayed fatalities from traffic incidents can impact official data, potentially masking the true scope of traffic-related deaths in the community.
Part of Troubling Trend
This case represents another tragic example of the hit-and-run incidents that have plagued Las Vegas roads throughout 2025. The valley has seen multiple high-profile hit-and-run cases this year, with several resulting in fatalities, contributing to what traffic safety advocates describe as an alarming trend of dangerous driving behaviors.
As Lee awaits his court appearance next month, the case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that result from impaired driving and fleeing the scene of an accident. The extended suffering endured by the victim and her family over the past month illustrates the far-reaching impact of such reckless decisions behind the wheel.
