The engineering marvel that has streamlined connectivity in East Lewisville has been recognized for its excellence. The Windhaven Underpass construction project, a considerable undertaking that has now been completed for just over a year, was honored with an Award of Merit in the Highway/Bridge category by the Engineering News Record Texas & Louisiana (ENR Texas & Louisiana). This nod from a respected publication affirms the significant impact of the project on the local infrastructure.
Breaking ground in Spring 2022, the Sundt Construction Company shouldered the gargantuan task of bringing this project to fruition. With a budget of approximately $16.6 million, the company surmounted the bureaucratic behemoth of federal approvals, particularly due to the peculiar challenges posed by constructing around railroad tracks. Despite the delays, Sundt's perseverance paid off, resulting in 1,500 feet of divided roadway extending from Cookie Lane to Brown Knight Lane and, importantly, a new 100-foot-long railroad bridge.
This newly minted underpass isn't merely a construction achievement; it's critical infrastructure, providing a vital artery linking the Sam Rayburn Tollway in Lewisville to the Dallas North Tollway in Plano. As detailed by the City of Lewisville's announcement, the Windhaven Underpass not only bolsters connectivity but is also a part of the Corporate Drive extension project — a significant endeavor signifying Lewisville's largest street project outside of the I-35E initiative undertaken by TxDOT.
Looking ahead, Sundt Construction is not resting on its laurels. The firm is actively engaged in two additional segments of the Corporate Drive extension, with eyes set on a Summer 2026 completion date. This continuous effort to enhance the city's infrastructure landscape is indeed praiseworthy. Winners of the ENR region's 2025 Regional Best Projects contest, which includes the Windhaven Underpass, were chosen for exemplifying the pinnacle of design and construction prowess within the region.
