In a push for environmental consciousness, Long Beach officials and nearly 20 local businesses have come together to spearhead the third annual Bring Your Own (BYO) Month this October. The month-long initiative, which encourages the adoption of reusable items, is a collaborative effort led by the City of Long Beach Department of Public Works and the Long Beach Reuses Coalition. "Bring Your Own Month is a great opportunity for our community to come together to make a real impact," said Mayor Rex Richardson. He also emphasized the dual benefits of reusables in supporting local businesses and working towards a "cleaner, more sustainable Long Beach," in a statement made by the City of Long Beach.

To fire up this eco-friendly campaign, participants are encouraged to bring their containers, utensils, and cups to local businesses and attend events designed to reduce waste. Director of Public Works, Eric Lopez, articulated the importance of business participation in the initiative, "Local businesses play a vital role in BYO Month and we’re proud to spotlight those that make it easier for community members who choose sustainable options every day," as mentioned on the City's official website. The month’s activities are set to commence with a free screening of the documentary "The Story of Plastic" on Sept. 30, which will also serve as a meet and greet with the LB Reuses Coalition.

Residents can participate further by downloading or acquiring a stamp card from businesses or events, which allows them to earn stamps for a shot at winning sustainability-themed prizes. Citizens are also invited to share their experiences by using the hashtag #BYOMonth2025 on social media. The City of Long Beach encourages the use of personal reusable to-go containers, cups, straws, utensils, and shopping bags as practical ways to diminish reliance on single-use disposables.
