
A Long Island man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for an attempted murder that took place in 2023. According to a statement from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, he used his vehicle to hit a woman and then crashed into an MTA bus in Downtown Brooklyn.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez described the incident as a "chilling, premeditated attack" after Jason Schaal, a 43-year-old from Riverhead, New York, pled guilty to second-degree attempted murder on July 25, Schaal had swerved onto a sidewalk with his 2012 Toyota Prius, hitting a 38-year-old woman standing on the corner, he then drove through Downtown Brooklyn where he rammed into an MTA bus causing injury to both the woman and the bus driver, as reported by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
After the crash, Schaal tried to escape but was detained by witnesses and court officers near Brooklyn Criminal Court; during his capture, he admitted intention in his actions to officers on the scene.
The woman victim suffered head wounds and was treated at Methodist Hospital, the bus driver, also harmed, was taken care of for neck and back injuries which was not limited to just passengers’ physical injuries, according to a press release from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Ashley Infante, alongside Madison Penn and Christopher Velez of the District Attorney's office.
