Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department were summoned to battle a blaze at a six-story residential building in Pico-Robertson on Monday. According to a Fox LA report, the fire, which broke out before 10:50 a.m. at 1115 S. Elm Dr., saw smoke pouring from a fourth-floor unit's balcony upon the firefighters' arrival. The crew was able to quickly gain access to the affected floor, declaring the fire knocked down within 26 minutes, and initiating efforts to clear smoke from the building.
Additional resources were requested as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, and their quick response enabled them to confine the blaze to just one unit, stopping it from spreading to others. According to an LAFD ALERT, this swift action was crucial in ensuring that adjacent units and floors above were successfully protected from fire damage. Traffic in the area continued to be affected as the Los Angeles Department of Transportation handled the aftermath while firefighters overhauled the damage.
The incident saw one 85-year-old woman rescued from the building. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries following reports of someone trapped inside. The updated LAFD alert states that 44 firefighters were present on scene, confirming the patient's age as 94 years old with minor injuries - an updated correction from initial reports. It's worth noting that the success of this operation hinged on the rapid coordination between emergency personnel and their resourceful handling of a potential crisis.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Los Angeles Fire Department is leading the inquiry and will provide updates as they become available.
