In an effort to aid Palisades residents whose homes were devastated by recent wildfires, Los Angeles has rolled out a pilot program aimed at fostering sustainable rebuilding. The High-performance, Optimized, Modern Electrification for Los Angeles (HOME LA) Pilot Program, introduced through the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), is providing financial incentives for property owners to reconstruct greener and more efficient homes. This program could help to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of new homes, and offer a blueprint for future building standards citywide.
The incentives, reaching up to $10,000, encourage the construction of all-electric homes equipped with the latest HVAC, water heating, cooking, and clothes drying technologies. Additional bonuses, such as a $5,000 subsidy for a whole-home battery, serve to further entice homeowners into making a full transition to cleaner energy sources. Per the statementmade by the Mayor's office, the HOME LA program presently caters to those affected by the Palisades, Hurst, Kenneth, Archer and Sunset wildfires. However, its scope is expected to broaden as more resources become accessible.
Apart from the bundled incentives, there's also the HOME LA Express option, which offers standalone rebates on the installation of various all-electric systems and appliances. These rebates range from $225 for induction cooktops to $2,500 for heat pump HVAC systems, aiming to reduce the immediate cost barrier that often hinders the adoption of such technologies, as reported by the Mayor's office.
LADWP is setting up online workshops on August 28 at 12pm and September 11 at 7pm to properly explain the benefits and application process, as noted by the Mayor's office. For those seeking more information or wishing to apply, the LADWP has set up a dedicated website at www.ladwp.com/homela, and a helpline via email at [email protected] or call (213) 367-8755.
