Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has officially named Steve Kang, President of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, as the new City Film Liaison, a move aimed to bolster the film and television industry in the city. According to a statement obtained by the Mayor's office, the announcement came during a meeting with the Entertainment Industry Council as the Mayor highlighted Kang's extensive understanding of the city's inner workings, particularly in infrastructure and permits.

In his role, Kang is tasked to work closely and to come up with strategies to ensure that film production stays rooted in Los Angeles. These include the continuation of Mayor Bass's Executive Directives 8 and 11, which aim to lower costs and simplify the on-location filming processes, therefore making it more appealing for both big studios and independent producers to film in LA's iconic locations. "I have full confidence that President Steve Kang will deliver in his role as City Film Liaison by finding solutions that protect our signature industry and ensure that local filming of TV shows, movies, and commercials can successfully continue and expand," Mayor Bass stated.

Kang, who currently manages the contract with FilmLA and collaborates with various City departments on special event and film production permits, brings a depth of experience to the position. "Local filming is vital to our city’s economy and City departments must prioritize their success," Kang told the Mayor's office. He emphasized his dedication to Mayor Bass’s vision of bolstering local production.

Mayor Bass has been a vocal supporter of the local entertainment industry, having advocated for the increase of the State Film & TV Tax Credit Program to $750 million – a figure that doubles its previous budget. Additionally, this past May, Executive Directive 11 was issued, further easing the filming process in the city. With these efforts, Mayor Bass is consistently seen to work towards maintaining Los Angeles as a desirable location for film and television projects. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Chair of Mayor Karen Bass’ Entertainment Industry Council, praised the decision, noting that Kang's experience with city infrastructure and processes made him an excellent choice for the role.

The synergy between city leadership and the entertainment industry seems to be strengthening with this strategic appointment. As the entertainment sector faces the ongoing challenges of the modern age, the collaboration between Kang and the Mayor's office is set to play a pivotal role in ensuring its prosperity and continuity in Los Angeles.
