Los Angeles is bracing for a wave of extreme heat, with the National Weather Service issuing an Extreme Heat Warning set to commence from 11:00 AM PDT on August 21 until 9:00 PM PDT on August 22. Expect sunny skies today with highs near 89. Winds will be light in the morning before shifting west-southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour this afternoon, according to the NWS.
Santa Ynez Mountains Eastern Range, Los Angeles County Inland Coast including Downtown Los Angeles, and Eastern Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area are the specific regions under the warning, with temperatures forecasted to soar between 95 to 105 degrees, the National Weather Service notes, a situation made life-threatening by the high risk of heat illness that can affect virtually anyone but particularly poses a severe threat to vulnerable populations like the elderly, the young, those without adequate cooling, and the outdoor laborers.
The advisory further cautions that leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles could be fatal as interiors reach lethally hot temperatures quickly, whilst recommending light and airy clothing as well as limiting exposure to the sweltering air by rescheduling strenuous activities to cooler early morning hours or evenings. "Take extra precautions when outside," the NWS statement reads.
Moreover, employers and workers are urged to implement safety measures per the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's guidance, which includes taking regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces. "Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1," the weather warning concludes.
