A Melvindale police officer, Matthew Furman, 40, faces multiple charges stemming from three separate incidents in 2021 and 2024, which include misconduct and assault, as reported by CBS News Detroit, ClickOnDetroit, and FOX 2 Detroit. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged Furman with three counts of misconduct in office and assault or assault and battery, as well as two counts of felonious assault.
The first incident involved a police pursuit in Dearborn on July 23, 2021, culminating with Furman allegedly kicking a suspect multiple times during an arrest, the details of which were outlined in a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit. In the most recent cases from April and July 2024, Furman conducted traffic stops that resulted in the use of a Taser and physical altercations—one involving a Detroit woman and another, a Melvindale man. He is accused of striking both individuals with a department-issued Taser and, in one case, kicking the man, as noted by ClickOnDetroit.
The arraignment for Officer Furman is expected to take place today. Prosecutor Kym Worthy emphasized the contrast between Furman's alleged behavior and that of the majority of officers by stating, "It is important to remember that the majority of our police officers are bravely placing their lives on the line every day and proudly serving with the utmost integrity," as per a report by FOX 2 Detroit. Worthy condemned Furman's actions by adding, "The alleged behavior of this officer is a criminal and does a disservice to the men and women who have taken an oath to protect and serve all of our citizens."
