Another break-in at a Metro Detroit trading card store has stoked alarm among local shop owners and collectors, with the latest incident occurring at GreenLight Cards & Collectibles in Clinton Township. As reported by WWJ Newsradio, roughly $5,000 worth of Pokémon cards were stolen, a situation made all the more distressing by its occurrence amidst a string of similar heists. Despite enhanced security measures such as motion detectors and an alarm system, which the owners believe startled the burglar, the theft was another blow to the community that values these items both monetarily and sentimentally.

Surveillance footage from GreenLight Cards & Collectibles showed the thief arriving on a bicycle and breaking through the front door, rushing straight to snatch the valuable cards. "He broke right in through the front door, less than 60 seconds, he ran straight over to our big showcase," Billy Petts from Greenlight Cards and Collectibles told WXYZ, expressing the gut-wrenching moment he discovered the loss. In urging the public’s vigilance, Petts emphasized, "if you notice any high-dollar Pokémon cards that are on Facebook Marketplace or going up online at a suspicious low rate... if you notice something, speak up."

This pattern of thefts is not limited to GreenLight Cards & Collectibles with First Edition Finds in Sterling Heights, reporting over $50,000 worth of cards taken in an earlier break-in. Owners like John Gappy of First Edition Finds have shared their nostalgia and heartbreak over the robberies, reflecting on the personal memories associated with their collections. "I remember every moment for these. They were just that big of a deal. We pulled a couple of these on Christmas morning when we were kids," Gappy recounted the personal significance of the stolen cards in a discussion with CBS Detroit.
