Michigan's push to curb robocall nuisances just went into overdrive with the latest crusade, known as Operation Robocall Roundup. Attorney General Dana Nessel is at the forefront, banding together with 50 other bipartisan attorneys general to issue a stern directive to 37 voice service providers, according to a recent announcement from the Attorney General's Office.
This collective show of force demands that these companies step up their game and cut the cord on illegal robocalls traversing their networks. By skirting FCC rules, these firms have left the door wide open for robocallers to exploit their infrastructure and trouble Michigan residents with relentless, unsolicited calls. The warning serves as a no-nonsense nudge: align with established standards, or face the consequences.
The letters, a coordinated effort involving the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, target providers who haven't played by the rules – failing to register in the FCC's Robocall Mitigation Database, ignoring official traceback requests, or carelessly lacking any kind of actionable plan to mitigate robocalls on their networks. With 100+ downstream companies also in receipt of these notifications, the message is loud and clear: it's time to isolate and shut down the rogue operators.
A noteworthy update from the FCC adds weight to this statewide initiative. The federal body announced the removal of seven telecom providers from the database, essentially blacklisting them from passing on their calls to other networks. Among the companies receiving warning letters are names like Advantage Investors LLC, Alpha Stream, and DigitalOcean, LLC, all of whom are now on notice for their lax approach to robocall facilitation.
In 2022, the formation of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force marked a significant phase in the legal wrangling against robocall purveyors. Spanning across the nation, state attorneys general have been poised, with this Michigan-led operation serving as the latest salvo against one of the most grievous forms of modern communication abuse.
