Michigan schools are set to experience an uptick in student safety and crime prevention efforts with the graduation of 28 officers from the Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring (TEAM) School Liaison Program. Organized by the MSP's Grants and Community Services Division, this program wrapped up a rigorous five-day, 40-hour training designed to prepare law enforcement professionals to better engage with youth in educational settings, according to the Michigan State Police.

The TEAM initiative harnesses the intersection of education and law enforcement, where officers receive specialized training in areas critical to their role in schools, including student psychology and classroom management, and know the importance of public speaking when addressing young audiences. The coverage is broad, addressing topics like personal safety, emergency response, legal awareness, and newer concerns such as cybercrime and vaping, and while the officers participate, they learn to help students in recognizing the consequences of bullying, understanding the perils of social media, and steering clear of illicit substances.

This latest class of graduates is comprised of a diverse group of officers that hail from several precincts and departments across the state – and one from Florida – representing a mixture of county sheriffs' offices, city and township police departments, a tribal police department, and hailing from counties and townships as varied as Bloomfield and Woodhaven. The officers can now carry the TEAM curriculum into any level of schooling, from elementary to high school, and in both public and private sectors across Michigan.

The curriculum, aligned with the Michigan Model for Health, touts a widespread implementation having already been introduced to over 250 school districts within the state, not to mention it has seen application in additional states including Indiana, North and South Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Utah, Texas and Alabama which speaks to its growing reputation and potential to create a safer, more informed school environment for students across the nation.
