In a significant move impacting consumers and the cannabis industry, Michigan's Sky Cannabis LLC has issued a recall for several flavored vape products due to the inclusion of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, a substance not sanctioned for consumption in such products. As reported by CBS News Detroit, affected items include a variety of Motor City Cannacarts and RIPZ vape cartridges with flavors such as Georgia Pie, Confetti Cake, Peach Cobbler, Wedding Cake, Ice Cream Man, and Tropic Thunder. Any customers who have purchased these products after Nov. 1, 2024, are advised to return them to their point of purchase.

With more than 26,000 vape cartridges caught up in the recall, the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency highlighted Sky Cannabis's cooperation. "Sky Cannabis is happy to cooperate with the CRA in this voluntary recall to ensure that all licensed cannabis products meet our strict production, quality and safety standards," Sky Cannabis' attorney, Denise Pollicella, told the Detroit Free Press via email. The presence of MCT oil was flagged after more than 30% of recently tested vape pens and edibles were found containing it, a synthetic cannabis oil conversion, or pesticides, triggering the CRA to ban its use.

This action by the Michigan CRA aligns the state with measures taken by other jurisdictions, such as Colorado's prohibition of MCT oil in inhalable marijuana goods, a decision that came in the wake of 2019's vaping-related lung illness episodes. According to information shared by FOX 2 Detroit, MCT oil—found in coconut and palm kernel oils—is sometimes utilized as a dietary fat supplement, yet its health effects when inhaled via vape products demand further examination, per NIH and other entities.
