As the Milwaukee Brewers achieved a franchise-record 14-game winning streak, attention in Milwaukee also turned to free George Webb burgers. Thousands lined up to receive the promotion, a tradition that takes place whenever the Brewers reach a 12-game winning streak, as reported by CBS 58.
Todd Sum, a resident of Greenfield, chose to preserve his free burger rather than eat it. In an interview with CBS 58, Sum explained that he has kept a burger from 2018 intact by drying it out and applying multiple coats of gloss using a method he developed. This year, he prepared to preserve another burger, stating, "It's cool to be a little piece of Brewer history, Milwaukee history, George Webb history."
The event began early in the morning, with the first customers, including Corey Paige, lining up hours before the promotion started at the M.L.K. and Kilbourn location, as WISN 12 News detailed. Last Friday, the George Webb chain distributed approximately 100,000 vouchers as part of the promotion.
This gastronomic celebration involves more than just a free hamburger. Lauren Schultz, a fan who traveled from Madison for her burger, explained, "It's so much more than just a free burger." She added, "This represents the Brewers and a tradition dating back many years and they've only done it three times now," according to the Journal Sentinel.
During the giveaway rush, employees like Robyn Thompson described the experience as an endurance test. In a statement to WISN 12 News, they identified "teamwork" as their strategy to manage the high demand. The George Webb burger giveaway is part of the city’s response to the Brewers’ winning streak and the tradition linked to the event.
