Heads up, S. 43rd Street travelers: significant disruptions are coming your way, as the American Transmission Company gears up for an extensive underground powerline overhaul slated to run through 2027. According to an announcement on the City of Milwaukee's official website, Alderman Peter Burgelis is calling on community members to voice their concerns and learn more at two meetings set for today, August 5, hosted at the Sister Joel Read Center of Alverno College.
Residents of the area should prepare for a shifting landscape of travel routes with bike and parking lanes disappearing during the project, with the consolation that at least one lane southbound and one northbound will remain accessible for vehicles on S. 43rd Street north of Forest Home Avenue, all while northbound traffic from Howard Avenue to Oklahoma Avenue will be detoured to 35th Street, making the daily commute a bit more convoluted than usual. Those interested in the details can drop into the college campus during either the 2-4 p.m. session or the 5-7 p.m. one.
Replacing what's been powering homes and streetlights for decades, the ATC project focuses on swapping out the aging infrastructure buried beneath the concrete since the 50s. This long-term construction engagement will unavoidably disrupt the typical ebb and flow of neighborhood life; however, electric services for residents are not expected to be compromised during the upgrade, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the anticipated upheaval.
