In an effort to keep Modesto streets safer and reduce the prevalence of alcohol-related problems, the Modesto Police Department has received a substantial grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). The grant, amounting to $58,600, is part of a broader initiative by the California ABC to partner with local law enforcement agencies in tackling issues that stem from alcohol misuse. "This is important to Modesto in order to increase protection for youth and to address crime at problem locations," Lieutenant Moffett explained, as per the Modesto Police Department.
The grant provides resources for operations that prevent the illegal sale of alcohol, particularly to minors and heavily inebriated individuals, and combat other related criminal activities, including illegal drug offenses. According to an announcement by the Modesto Police Department, the funds will also be used to help prevent illegal solicitations of alcohol. Nearly 50 grants were awarded across California through ABC's Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) program, which has been in operation since 1995 and aims to foster synergies between ABC agents and local police forces.
According to the Modesto Police Department, the APP program, as endorsed by the ABC Director Paul Tupy, has shown positive results in communities across the state. "Our Alcohol Policing Partnership program can improve the quality of life in neighborhoods," Tupy stated, illustrating the impact of resource allocation on local issues of public health and crime linked to alcohol consumption.
Alongside targeted enforcement efforts, the partnership between ABC and local law enforcement is also set to provide educational outreach. The overarching mission of ABC is not solely to enforce but also to educate, aiming to increase service levels and public safety within the state. With these newly acquired funds, the Modesto Police Department hopes to address and reduce alcohol-related harm on a community level, striving for amelioration of wellness and safety for all residents.
