Yesterday, a serious multi-vehicle accident occurred on Detroit's Lodge Freeway, reportedly resulting in multiple hospitalizations and serious injuries. CBS News Detroit described how a 27-year-old man in a Chevrolet Impala was driving the wrong way northbound on the southbound side near Grand River Avenue when he hit a Nissan passenger car head-on, leading to several other collisions involving a total of five vehicles. Michigan State Police stated that some passengers suffered serious injuries and were "very fortunate" that there were no deaths.
The driver of the Impala showed signs of impairment, prompting state troopers to request a blood draw, according to FOX 2 Detroit. MSP Lt. Mike Shaw explicitly noted the role of impairment in the crash, saying, "It appears that the wrong-way driver was impaired and this led to the crash." Shaw further remarked on the availability of options to prevent impaired driving, saying, "There is no reason to drive impaired with all the options available to get around."
The freeway was closed shortly for investigation, but has since reopened. Michigan State Police Metro South troopers and the crash reconstruction unit are continuing their probe into the incident. WXYZ reported that multiple people were hospitalized to treat serious injuries resulting from both the initial and secondary crashes.
