Updated signs have surfaced near the now-controversial crosswalk of Pulse nightclub, a place marked by tragedy and remembrance. According to reports by WFTV, these signs were installed overnight and come with a clear message: "Defacing Roadway Prohibited" and "No Impeding Traffic." This update follows the recent directive by Gov. Ron DeSantis and state authorities to enforce consistent regulations across Florida's roads.
Residents woke up to these signs just days after the crosswalks of Orlando that once bore vibrant pride colors were muted to standard white and black. WFTV reported that the change sparked community outrage and a form of protest that transformed these crosswalks into ephemeral canvases of chalk art.
In a statement procured by ClickOrlando, Bubba Trahan, an advocate and protester at the Pulse memorial, expresses the sentiment that these actions are about silencing voices, stating, "They are trying to use force. I mean, they’ve been trying since Thursday to kind of stop us from providing art to the community. It’s just part of their fascist agenda to be able to silence any voices that they don’t quite agree with." The Pulse site remains a nexus for diverse communities, including the LGBT and Latinx populations, with Trahan highlighting the importance of community solidarity.
Regardless of the freshly painted white stripes and the cautions against roadway art, these chalked messages are a clear signal from the community that the memory of the 49 victims of Pulse will not be paved over in silence nor forgotten.
