In the wake of a heartbreaking shooting in Midtown that tragically cut four lives short, including that of an NYPD officer, New York City is simultaneously grappling with loss and recognizing its law enforcement's efforts as July's crime statistics roll in. Mayor Eric Adams, joined by NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, shared some numbers that, while stark against the recent violence, paint a broader picture of a city seeing historical reductions in crime. According to a statement obtained by the City of New York, overall crime in July dropped by 5.6 percent, leading off the "SEVENTH consecutive quarter of crime reductions."
Mayor Adams spoke to the dual nature of the situation, saying, "New York City is grieving this week after the tragic loss of four innocent lives — including an NYPD officer — in a senseless shooting in Midtown. As we mourn, we must also find ways to turn our pain into purpose; it's the least we can do to honor the victims." He went on to accentuate the silver lining amidst the tragedy, highlighting that "July saw the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims in recorded history." He firmly believes that this progress is no coincidence but rather the result of the administration's "dedication to policing with precision and integrity," as per the City of New York.
On her part, Commissioner Tisch credited the NYPD's workforce for these milestones, noting the agency has now recorded "the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims ever for the first seven months of any year." The subway system wasn't exempted from this wave of relative calm, boasting July as one of its safest months, barring the peculiar pandemic years. These remarks were made during a briefing, as per the official release by the City of New York.
While some voices in the community continue to call for defunding the police, Mayor Adams made it clear his administration intends firmly to do the opposite. "At a time when many want to defund the police, our administration will always defend them," he vowed, expressing his profound thanks to the officers who "put on their uniforms every single day, running toward danger so we don’t have to face it ourselves." The administration’s stance remains unwavering in its support of law enforcement amidst a backdrop of challenges and successes, as per the City of New York.
