Over in Wilmington, an incident involving a firearm has led to the arrest of a Newark man. According to the Wilmington Police Department reports, on the evening of August 19, Wilmington Police were called to West 12th Street after receiving a tip about an individual carrying a gun.
Once officers arrived on the scene, they identified a man matching the description provided by the informant – 20-year-old Ra’shawn Owens of Newark attempted to make contact with officers, Owens decided to bolt, leading them on a short chase before finally being detained and will you believe it, the officers managed to bring Owens in without further trouble after the pursuit; they also found on him a loaded .22-caliber handgun along with additional ammunition, as reported by the Wilmington Police Department.
Owens is now facing multiple charges: two counts of "Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited," "Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon," and "Resisting Arrest." The legal process kicked off with an arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 11. After posting a $1,550 secured bail, Owens was released. It stands as a stark reminder of the gun issues cities are grappling with, and raises questions about bail sufficiency for related offenses. The Wilmington Police Department has since confirmed the details of Owens' charges.
