The North Carolina State Health Plan has announced premium changes for 2026. Active members will see an increase in premiums, while some family coverage plans may experience a decrease, according to the North Carolina Treasurer’s Office. The adjustments aim to address a $507 million budget shortfall and introduce a new salary-based premium model for lower-paid state employees.
The plan, covering teachers, state employees, and retirees, has relied on cash reserves to maintain stable premiums over the past seven years. With rising healthcare costs and reduced reserves, the board approved the changes with support from a $100 million legislative contribution and lower provider reimbursement rates.
Members will receive detailed information on the updated benefits and premiums before Open Enrollment, which runs from October 13 to 31, allowing them to make informed coverage choices for the coming year.
