A fawn found itself in a perilous situation last Friday but was thankfully saved thanks to the quick actions of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Team. The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. near the 600 block of Tonkawa Trail in Orion Township, with the rescue operation taking place in Manitou Lake and involving a distressed fawn trapped in a metal grate.
The emergency unfolded after a local homeowner made a call upon hearing the troubled cries of the fawn, which ClickOnDetroit reported was struggling to keep its head above water; authorities believe the animal had been trapped for several hours. The rescue team, aided by Oakland County Animal Control, managed to free the fawn without any harm coming to it, even though it was a situation where if it wasn't for the team's swift intervention, the fawn would have likely died, the emergency responders worked with haste balancing urgency with the delicate condition of the young deer as they set about their rescue.
Following the rescue, the fawn was thoroughly checked for injuries, which, fortunately, were non-existent and subsequently led to its release back into the wild. Sheriff Michael Bouchard expressed pride in his team’s life-saving efforts, saying, "It’s always a great day when we can respond to a call and save a life, be it human, or in this case, a cute little fawn!” as quoted by WWMT.
In the aftermath, MLive noted Sheriff Bouchard's statement expressing pride in the Oakland County team’s capability to respond effectively to a variety of scenarios and make a difference, a sentiment that reflects the sheriff’s office's commitment to not only serving the people but also the area's wildlife in distress.
