Orlando's Howard Johnson motel on International Drive, known for accommodating tourists and residents alike, has become the focus of a city-enforced evacuation order. Safety concerns emerged after the city discovered that water service had been shut off due to nonpayment by the property owners, and the fire alarms were not operational. A temporary water service restoration agreement with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) couldn't mitigate the need for residents to leave for their safety.
Code enforcement officers and the Orlando Fire Department responded immediately to the situation when alerted on August 7. They instituted a "fire watch" as the building's non-functional fire alarms posed a severe safety risk, ultimately leading to the evacuation order effective Monday morning, according to a report by ClickOrlando. As residents scrambled to find new lodgings, the city estimated that about 40 people would need assistance amidst this upheaval.
Tenant Travis Wieand told ClickOrlando, "It's like losing everything we own," revealing the emotional toll such displacements exact on people who often have limited means to begin with. Other tenants, like Roxie Streeter, echoed this sentiment in an interview with My News 13, "Stress don't cover it, not knowing where to go, where to stay. Wondering if you are going to have a roof over your head that night," highlighting the uncertainty and anxiety of the situation.
Organizations, including Homeless Services Network and the Coalition for the Homeless, have stepped in, offering guidance to the affected residents, some of whom have been at the motel for extended periods while striving to keep afloat economically. Brian Postlewait, Chief Operating Officer of the Homeless Services Network, noted the prevalence of such unfortunate scenarios in Central Florida, indicating a systemic issue with the transiency and vulnerability of low-cost hotel residents.
The owner of the Howard Johnson property, listed as RORE Orlando I Drive LLC, has been unreachable, suggesting a lack of accountability in the situation. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Howard Johnson expressed concern to My News 13, stating, "This information is troubling and is no way reflective of our brand values or our expectations of franchisees," hinting at a potential disconnect between corporate expectations and the on-the-ground reality faced by residents of the franchise location.
