Get ready to dazzle your sneakers on a brand-new piece of street art, because the futsal/basketball courts at Othello Playground in southeast Seattle are about to get a serious splash of color. In a collaboration that screams community spirit, Seattle Parks & Recreation has joined forces with AT&T and City Year to give a drab space a facelift—a move that echoes through the streets of this diverse Seattle neighborhood.
The court is getting a mural makeover through AT&T's Revive Your Court Program, and the plan is to transform the ground into a vibrant canvas that celebrates U.S.–Mexico Bicentennial. In a statement released by Parkways, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent AP Diaz expressed the excitement for this artistic endeavor, "This mural partnership with AT&T and City Year revitalizes the court at Othello Playground and also celebrates the U.S.–Mexico Bicentennial, honoring culture and community through creativity and collaboration."
Those interested in getting their hands, or rather their paintbrushes, dirty can join the fray on August 14. The day kicks off at 9 a.m., post an 8:30 a.m. registration, and wraps up with a program closing and lunch by 12:30 p.m. If you're keen, don't drag your feet because volunteering slots are a game of dibs—first-come, first-served. And yes, apart from the good feels that come with community service, there's also the promise of snacks and a boxed lunch to sweeten the deal.
While AT&T might be the big name bringing resources to this urban gallery, it's about much more than getting logos in front of eyes. Lauren Paolini from AT&T said in a statement, "Revive Your Court is about more than fresh paint—it’s about creating spaces where young people and families can gather, play, and be inspired." So, clear your calendars this Thursday and get ready to put some elbow grease into the beautification of the Othello Playground—it's where art and community will bounce in harmony, one brushstroke at a time.
For those looking to lead with their creativity and community spirit, or simply wanting to know more about this colorful turn of events, should direct their queries to Jacobo Jimenez via [email protected]. Just remember, from August 4 to August 15, the Othello Playground’s sports court and surrounding park area will be off-limits to prepare for the transformation. It might be an inconvenience for a bit, but the payoff will be a community space bursting with new life and color—a small price to pay for a leap in the local aesthetic.
