The Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) under the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Bridge is scheduled for overnight closures, as announced by the City of Philadelphia Department of Streets in a recent statement. According to the official press release, the trail will be inaccessible from 9:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow for the removal of temporary metal shielding underneath the bridge.
During this time, northbound travelers on the SRT will be redirected to bypass the area by taking the path around the Philadelphia Museum of Art via Anne D’Harnoncourt Drive or Eakins Oval and Kelly Drive, and similarly, southbound users will be advised to use the same detours to ensure continuity of their route without exposing them to the construction, as per the city's department. Trail users are advised to exercise caution due to potentially steep or narrow paths, especially if detouring via Anne D’Harnoncourt Drive may involve encountering stairs or inclines.
The upcoming closures are part of the broader Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Bridge Rehabilitation, a significant investment by the city costing $20 million with the intent to enhance the vital infrastructure for diverse modes of transportation. This project, when complete, promises to enhance connectivity by featuring three vehicle lanes and a shared use path that links MLK Drive Trail with Eakins Oval and Center City, aimed at serving the community's varying transit needs efficiently.
This effort to refurbish the 700-foot-long bridge spanning the Schuylkill seeks to address the necessities of Philadelphia's populace, striving to furnish access to employment, entertainment, and moments of leisure found in the infinitely unfolding green spaces.
