In a stunning display of power hitting that sent the Citizens Bank Park crowd into a frenzy, Kyle Schwarber launched four homers in a single game, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a decisive 19-4 win over the Atlanta Braves. This Herculean effort marked Schwarber as the 21st player in MLB history to achieve this feat. According to FOX29, Schwarber was 4 for 6 with a team-record nine RBIs.
Swinging into the record books, Schwarber also took the top spot in the National League with a career-high 49 homers, setting himself up to potentially surpass Ryan Howard's illustrious 58-homer mark from 2006. In an interview obtained by the NY Times, Schwarber humbly acknowledged the momentous occasion, saying, "It just cooperated, right? I’ve been saying you can do everything right and get out, and you can do everything wrong and get a hit." He also accented the evening's festivities by filming a stint for the popular sitcom "Abbott Elementary" immediately after the historic game.
The evening proved to be one of wonder and missed chances as well. Schwarber nearly clinched a once-unthinkable fifth homer but ultimately popped out when facing Braves infielder Vidal Bruján, who had taken the mound during the blowout. Schwarber jokingly told ESPN, "I stink against position players." The Phillies' outfielder has now tallied 333 homers over his 11-season career.
