Calling all civically-engaged Pierce County residents: there's an opportunity knocking for those seeking to have their voices heard in the upcoming General Election. The Pierce County Auditor's Office has announced openings on committees charged with writing statements for or against various propositions featured in the November local voters’ pamphlet. These committees will provide vital input on educational levies, bond propositions, and emergency service measures.
In total, six propositions currently lack opposing committee members, including those affecting Steilacoom and Orting school districts, as well as several fire protection districts. The significance of participating cannot be overstated, as the selected statements will help to shape voter opinion on critical community issues. Without volunteers to quickly step forward, the balance of information provided to voters could become skewed.
To be eligible to join a committee, individuals must reside within the jurisdiction of the position for which they are applying, promise to collaborate with fellow members, and have ready access to email. According to the Pierce County website, Committee responsibilities include reading, understanding, and fulfilling the obligations described in the Elections Guide for Jurisdictions. This includes adhering to word limits, formatting requirements, and submission deadlines for both primary statements and rebuttals.
Moreover, committee members are required to have their personal contact information, such as phone number, email, or website address, published in the pamphlet. "At least one committee member must be willing to submit phone number, email, or website address for publication in the local voters’ pamphlet," states the notice from the Pierce County website. The call for public transparency is high, but so too is the potential influence that committee members can wield on wide-ranging community issues.
Interested parties have only a slim window to leap into action, however, with the deadline to request a committee appointment fast approaching. Requests must be submitted via email by noon tomorrow, and the final committee statements need to be ready for email submission later the same day by 4:30 p.m.
