A lightning strike is reported to have sparked a fire at an apartment building in Pikesville, displacing multiple families and leading to the unfortunate death of at least one dog. According to information obtained by Fox Baltimore, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon after the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Baltimore County area at 3:33 p.m.
Baltimore County fire officials responded quickly to the blaze at the 1800 block of Rambling Ridge Lane, with fire crews arriving around 3:40 p.m. to find heavy fire bursting through the roof, which necessitated to request additional personnel swiftly. During the firefighting efforts, there was a partial collapse of the roof and an interior staircase. In the wake of the fire, two firefighters suffered minor injuries but were released from the hospital, as relayed by WBALTV.
The Baltimore County Police Department's Fire Investigation Division confirmed that a lightning strike had occurred at the location, according to a lightning strike report from Core Logic. Despite the rapid response and efforts of the fire crew, more than 15 people were displaced by the incident. Baltimore County Fire Department Public Information Officer Bureau Chief Travis Francis mentioned, "We know we have upwards of at least 15 residents, I can't say if they're adults or children at this time, that are displaced. So we'll be working with the apartment management as well as Red Cross to get them assistance," as he stated, as per WBALTV.
The agencies involved, including the National Weather Service and the Fire Department, are continuing to investigate and review the exact circumstances surrounding the strike and subsequent fire.
