To help increase the limited tree canopy in Lealman, Pinellas County Urban Forestry has launched an Adopt-a-Tree program that provides free trees for planting on both residential and commercial properties. Lealman, reportedly having the lowest tree canopy among unincorporated areas in the county, aims to create a greener landscape.

Property owners in the Lealman CRA, and the neighborhoods of West Lealman and East Lealman, have a chance to participate by registering for the program before September 4, as relayed by the County's announcement. Those who qualify can expect to have up to two trees delivered around September 25. The process, as stated by the County, requires participants to not only register but to also prepare their own planting hole(s) to quickly ensure the saplings can be planted upon delivery.

Available tree species include Bald Cypress, Southern Magnolia, Southern Red Cedar, Youpon Holly, Simpson Stopper, Slash Pine, and Live Oak. However, officials have noted that the allocation of tree species cannot be guaranteed, depending on availability. Regardless of the type, each tree stands up to six feet tall and has a stem diameter of approximately one inch. To facilitate proper planting, residents are reminded to call 811 before digging to avoid any disruption to underground utilities.

Pinellas County Urban Forestry’s responsibilities extend beyond this program, including the maintenance of trees located on or overhanging county property. The Adopt-a-Tree initiative is part of their broader role in managing the urban canopy, which provides environmental benefits such as stormwater management, air quality improvement, and temperature moderation.
