In a modest celebration of National Dog Day, TSA's Cutest Canine Contest crowned Steeler, a spirited 2-year-old Labrador retriever hailing from Pittsburgh International Airport, as the champ for 2025. According to WPXI, edging out the competition with the help of social media votes from the public, Steeler snagged the coveted title among four regional finalists in a hard-fought contest that hinged on popular acclaim.
Not merely a charming face, Steeler boasts an important role in TSA's security lineup, with a tenure just over a year, though he's already left a substantial mark at his local airport, and is trained in detecting explosives in a bustling travel setting, CBS News Pittsburgh illuminates this promising canine's background revealing his birth on Super Bowl Sunday alongside littermates named in an NFL-team themed tradition.
Adam Stahl, TSA's Acting Deputy Administrator, used the occasion to acknowledge the critical role of canine teams, saying, "Our explosives detection canines and their handlers play a critical role in protecting the nation’s transportation systems," as WPXI quoted him. Steeler's handler, Mark Smith, took pride in what he called "fate" that brought Steeler to Pittsburgh, and the dog's favorite activities include fetching balls, playing with a tug rope, and indulging in jumbo hot dogs, activities that resonate with the joyous simplicity of a dog's life.
