In a move escalating the ongoing trade tensions, President Donald J. Trump has signed an Executive Order levying a 25% tariff on imports from India, a decision driven by the South Asian country's continued purchase of Russian oil. This action, announced by the White House yesterday, is set to take effect on August 27, with the intent to address what has been described as a national emergency precipitated by Russia's maneuvers in Ukraine. According to the White House, "The President found that India is currently importing Russian Federation oil."
This new tariff will be in addition to existing duties and is separate from previous tariffs under Executive Order 14257. However, it will not apply to articles included in Annex II to EO 14257. Aimed at upsetting economics that further the reach of Russian influence, the White House asserts that India's reselling of the imported oil "often at significant profit," bolsters Russia's economy, thereby funding its aggressive actions against Ukraine. Said to be coordinating with various Secretaries, President Trump aims to potentially extend similar tariffs to other nations that are found to import Russian oil, either directly or indirectly.
"By imposing a 25% tariff, President Trump aims to deter countries from supporting the Russian Federation’s economy through oil imports and impose serious economic consequences on the Russian Federation for its ongoing aggressions," stated the White House fact sheet. The move also reflects Trump's self-styled 'America First' policy and his unequivocal approach towards countries that engage in trade practices that he perceives as aiding adversaries.
During previous statements, Trump has made his stance on the matter clear, warning that such measures would be taken against countries fueling the Russian economy through their purchase of its oil. "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits …. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA," Trump had said, as per the statements released by the White House. In doing so, the President has underscored his commitment to countering what he deems to be Russian aggression, even passing the economic burden onto countries like India for their association with Russian Federation oil imports.
