
President Donald J. Trump has issued an Executive Order aiming to snazz up Federal digital and physical services through the "America by Design" initiative. The Presidential directive sets up a National Design Studio and introduces the position of Chief Design Officer, who's tasked to oversee design enhancements, recruit designers from the private sector, and cut down on redundant design costs while standardizing the government's approach to user experience, as detailed in a White House Fact Sheet released yesterday.
The drumbeat of complaints about the public's struggle with outdated Federal interfaces has been growing louder, evidence comes from an estimated 26,000 Federal websites across the nation, less than 20% of which employs code from the United States Web Design System (USWDS), leading to a jumbled and often user-unfriendly experience, in addition to a measly 6% rating as "good" for mobile performance, furthermore, a staggering 45% aren't considered mobile friendly, the new initiative seeks to bring all government agencies in line with the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act (IDEA).
The Trump Administration highlights efforts to streamline federal agencies, pointing to a 37% reduction in the backlog of veterans awaiting benefits and a transition from paper-based financial transactions to electronic payments. Federal retirement records, once stored in a limestone mine, have also been digitized. Additionally, President Trump has directed that funding opportunity announcements use plain language instead of bureaucratic jargon, as per the White House statement.
President Trump has ordered steps to cut red tape and streamline federal operations, part of his broader push to make government work more like the private sector. The move marks a shift from outdated, paper-heavy processes toward a more digital and efficient approach aimed at building public trust. The administration is also emphasizing innovation and better design in federal digital services, recognizing the role government websites and platforms play in shaping citizen expectations.
