In response to recent increases in violent crime in Washington, D.C., President Trump has announced the deployment of the National Guard to support public safety efforts in the capital. Speaking during a press conference at the White House, he stated, "We're going to make it safe; we're going to make it smart; we're going to make it beautiful," according to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). Approximately 800 National Guard personnel have been assigned to the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, with duties including law enforcement support and administrative assistance.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth provided additional details regarding the deployment, confirming that Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will oversee the operation. The National Guard is scheduled to begin its presence on city streets in the coming week. Hegseth stated, "They will be strong, they will be tough, and they will stand with their law enforcement partners," as reported by the DOD. The decision follows a series of violent incidents, including the murders of two embassy staffers, a congressional intern, and an assault on a federal employee.
This mobilization is not the first instance of National Guard involvement in federal initiatives. Previously, they have worked with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection on efforts to address illegal border crossings.
In addition to law enforcement support, the initiative includes a cleanup and repair effort aimed at improving the city’s appearance. President Trump highlighted issues such as graffiti, litter, and damaged infrastructure, including broken marble panels, as targets for restoration. "We're going to restore the city back to the gleaming capital that everybody wants it to be," he said, as noted by the DOD. The executive order cited significant increases in murders and vehicle thefts as justification for the combined security and beautification plan.
