In Rancho Cordova, local youth recently got an up-close look at the latest tool in the Rancho Cordova Police Department's (RCPD) arsenal: drones. POP Officer Gordon, part of the department's SSO SCOUT Team, gave a demonstration illustrating how these Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) contribute to more effective, efficient, and safe law enforcement operations. The team, which includes FAA-certified UAS pilots spread across all SSO Divisions, is equipped to handle a variety of missions within Rancho Cordova and the larger Sacramento County.
Drones of various sizes, ranging from devices small enough to fit in the palm of a hand to larger multi-propeller systems, make up the SCOUT Team's inventory. These tools, according to a statement obtained by the City of Rancho Cordova, not only assist in locating missing persons, suspects, and victims but also provide valuable aid in high-risk searches and crime scene reconstructions. Additionally, their use in increasing officer safety is notable, especially in situations where maintaining observation of potentially armed suspects is required, but poses a risk to personnel.
RCPD, known for staying abreast of technological trends, sees UAS as a force multiplier. Officer Gordon emphasized how these devices allow law enforcement personnel to accomplish more with less—less time and fewer officers on the ground, which keeps them ready to respond to other calls for service.
The engagement with local youth is part of RCPD's ongoing effort to educate the community on their cutting-edge public safety tools.
