The City of Reno is gathering public input on proposed zoning changes to Title 18 that would allow more childcare facilities. On June 4, the Reno City Council asked staff to draft an amendment to address zoning barriers, and on July 23, the amendment process began. The goal is to simplify review procedures and reduce costs and delays for childcare providers, according to the City of Reno.
The City of Reno is reviewing the Minor Conditional Use Permit, which has been a costly and time-consuming requirement for in-home and workplace childcare providers. Officials are considering allowing childcare uses by right to expand local services. “I want to thank Vice Mayor Kathleen Taylor for bringing this critical issue to our attention,” Mayor Hillary Schieve said. “This process will help move us forward in addressing the childcare crisis and ensuring families in Reno have better access to affordable, reliable care.” Taylor noted the importance of childcare for families and economic stability and said she would work on reducing regulatory barriers.
Reno residents are invited to join discussions on the future of childcare from September through October. Public meetings, stakeholder sessions, and an online feedback form in English and Spanish will be available until October 30. Two virtual public meetings are scheduled for October 14 and October 20, with details and registration on the city’s website. More information and feedback options are available on the Zoning Code Clean Up page at reno.gov, as reported by the City of Reno.
