The Round Rock Police Department has issued a warning about a spike in rental scams, as reported on their official website. The last few weeks saw an uptick in cases where potential renters were misled into paying for properties whose supposed landlords had no right to lease. Detectives are currently investigating these incidents and suggesting preventative measures.
Scammers have been crafting bogus ads for rental properties on various housing websites and social media, demanding money or personal details to "secure" nonexistent or misrepresented properties. Promising deals that vanish once payment is sent, these rental listings often exhibit prices that are too tempting to pass up. In their haste to avoid losing a seemingly perfect spot, victims have been skipping the most crucial step - verifying the property's legitimacy.
To combat this deceptive practice, the Round Rock Police Department advises the public to take several steps before entering into rental agreements. Individuals should go see the property in person, make sure the property owner is confirmed through county records, not send any money by services like Zelle or Venmo until you're sure the rental is legitimate, and not succumb to high-pressure tactics often used by scammers.
People who have fallen prey to these schemes are encouraged to report their experiences to the police department at 512-218-5500. Furthermore, victims can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. By taking these proactive measures, renters can protect themselves from falling into the traps set by these cunning fraudsters who are looking to profit from their urgency and need for a place to call home.
